The lively tree lined street of Boroughgate located in the heart of Appleby leads to the well preserved 12th century old Norman Castle and the fine medieval Church of St. Lawrence. Standing within the church is the Anne’s tomb, which contains an organ formerly in Carlisle Cathedral, and thought to be one of the oldest in the country. One of the best times to visit Appleby is in June when the town celebrates the grand Horse Fair. It is world famous, the largest of its kind in the world, and attracts a huge gypsy gathering who come here to sell their horses. The fair takes place in the field called Fair Hill that overlooks the town and is just walking distance from holiday homes Appleby in Westmorland and house rentals. During the fair you can see horses everywhere – in the town, along the roadsides, and on the banks of the river Eden. Another significant event celebrated in Appleby in the month of July is the grand Jazz Festival where you can enjoy the mindboggling performances of various music bands that come here from all parts of the country.
