Whitstable is a complete paradise for water sports enthusiasts. The emerald blue waters lapping its gorgeous sandy beaches are perfect for practicing snorkeling, swimming, surfing, diving and sailing. Take a cool stroll on the harbor, which commands spectacular views of the sea or enjoy sailing trip from the harbour to the windfarm, the sea fort and a seal watching spot in the Thames Estuary. You can experience history at the Whitstable Museum and Gallery which displays artifacts and portraits relating to the town's seafaring traditions, with special features on oysters, diving and shipping. If you are looking for some entertainment, step out from the comforts of your Whitstable accommodation and make your way to Playhouse, which is owned by theatrical group, the Lindley Players. Here you can soothe your ears with some great music and theatrical performances. From some more fun, you can also plan a day trip to the nearby town of Brookland, and the beautiful seaside resort of Folkestone.
Whitstable is known for its great fairs and festivals, which keep city alive and buzzing all around the year. One of the most significant events is the nine day Oyster Festival, which traditionally starts with an opening parade on the nearest Saturday to St James' Day and followed by many interesting music, dance programs art exhibitions and a lavish feast which gives you the opportunity to sample out succulent seafood, and lip smacking desserts. May Day is celebrated with the annual Jack-in-the-Green parade, with traditional English dancing throughout the town, a vibrant fair at Whitstable Castle and a maypole dance by local schoolchildren. In the month of October, Whitstable holds an Artists Open House Trail where you can buy authentic souvenirs and artworks of the many popular as well as local artists.
