Built by Emporer Frederick is the Castello Grande or Hohenstaufen Castle, which stands majestically in the heart of Brindisi. This 13th century structure has a trapezoid plan with massive square towers. During World War II, it briefly served as the residence of King Victor Emmanuel III. Popularly referred to as “ Forte a Mare” (Sea Fort), the Aragonese Castle was built by King Ferdinand I of Naples in 1491 on the S .Andres Island facing the port.
