Trujillo has an incredible wealth of noble monuments and mansions, which are scattered all over the town. The Plaza Mayor, the city centre, is filled with many elegant buildings including the Church of St Martin, which houses a glorious pipe organ. The striking feature of the square is the life size statue of Francisco Pizarro mounted on a horse back. This 6500 kg bronze statue was created by North American artist Charles Rumsey. The main square of Trujillo is considered one of the most impressive examples of 16th century Spanish Renaissance in Spain. Just a few minutes walk from the square is the La Coria Museum, which explores the history of the conquest of the America. Set above the main square is the medieval part of the town known as the "Villa", which is overlooked by the imposing Moorish castle of Trujillo. Encircled by a soaring fortified wall, the Villa portrays influences from the three cultures that have left their indelible mark on the city, namely Roman, Muslim and Christian. The cobblestone streets and the old Gothic gates such as the Arch of Triumph (Arco de Triunfo), the Arch of St James (Puerta de Santiago), and the Arch of St.Andrew (Puerta de San Andres) will take you back in to the golden past of the town. Other significant monuments include the Santa Maria Church, St James Church, the 14th century Alcazar de Luis Chaves Viejo, Pizzaro's House, and the Wine and Cheese Museum.
