The Castle was first called Vicchio dei Longobardi, the village of the Longobards, but during the Renaissance the name was changed to the present Vicchiomaggio (Maggio meaning May in Italian). The Castle occupies a strategic position on the hill dominating the Greve valley and, in the middle ages, was the first defence for Florence during its feuds with Siena. Mention of the Castle can also be found in the archives of Leonardo da Vinci who was a guest during a period of residence in the area. The academic Francesco Redi prepared his book ‘Bacco in Toscana’, published in 1685, at Vicchiomaggio. In it he describes the virtues of wine and the benefits of moderate drinking. The historic atmosphere of the Castle is totally retained and the building itself is maintained to the highest possible order. Secluded but not isolated, Vicchiomaggio is only 18 km from Florence and 4 km from the delightful market town of Greve in Chianti.
