The apartment is on the top floor of an old restored building in an ancient Borgo, founded in 1494, that was for centuries in the ownership of the D'Agostino family and was a flourishing center for wine-making and olive oil production. It is still surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, but the Borgo is now a delightful resort consisting of 64 individually-designed privately-owned apartments and a small all-suite hotel in the elegant Villa, the former family home. The apartment has a sunken living room and double bedroom, with a comfortable sofa bed for two in the former, a kitchen and bathroom, and has views on two sides. The hilly landscape toward Florence would be instantly recognizable to a Renaissance painter. The apartment is light and airy, and there is also full air-conditioning if required. There are 23 acres of landscaped grounds, two superb outdoor swimming pools and a spa pool, an enoteca or wine bar open from breakfast till late evening where anything from an espresso to a full meal can be savored any time, with live music on the terrace each Friday and Saturday (a perfect setting for a Tuscan sunset), and also a gourmet restaurant offering Tuscan cuisine by one of the region's most renowned chefs at a range of prices. The former estate extends a great distance, offering opportunities for trail-walking, biking, horse-riding, and gentle country strolls through valleys, woods and across open hills. The nearest big village, Palaia, is about a mile away and an easy walk, with a picturesque main street, an ancient arch at each end. Palaia has a bank, pharmacy, gas station, post office, grocery stores, restaurants and outdoor cafes, and antique shops. The nearest big town, Pontedera, is 15 mins by car and located in the Arno valley, with big stores, shopping malls, a multiplex and other entertainment and a train station on the main line between Pisa and Florence. The Borgo is an excellent touring center with such landmark cities as Pisa, Florence, Lucca. Volterra, Pistoia and San Gimignano easily reachable within an hour, Siena in about 90 minutes. The shores of the Mediterranean are less than an hour away. Closer to the Borgo are many delightful hill villages with ancient churches, piazzas, gelateria and usually at least one superb restaurant. It's the perfect place for a romantic vacation (ideal for honeymooners) and as a base for those who want to explore the treasures of Tuscany, one of Europe's finest regions.
