Sonnhalde is a fully modernised Victorian Villa with that “nice to come home to relaxing atmosphere”.
It was built by a young pioneering Swiss doctor in the 1880s to be used as his family home and as a rest and recuperation centre for his patients in the Victorian spa town of Kingussie.
Having proved to be too small for both purposes he then went on to build in the town the Grampian Sanitorium known today as St Vincents.
Sonnhalde Guest House is now the home of Bernie and Janis Jones who for the past 19 years have had the pleasure of looking after guests from all over the globe.
We have a mix of family, twin and double rooms available, some with one of the best views overlooking Kingussie, our tariff is from £26.00pp b&b, please contact us for availability and room rates, reductions are available for children sharing parents rooms.
Bernie’s knowledge of the local area, its history and natural history is second to non and he has successfully run Natural history,Photographic and history tours with Merlin Wildlife and MacDonald Tours for the past 17 or so years, and we are therefore, very happy to guide our guests to the best of the area, including some of the best fly fishing.
Why don’t you relax and enjoy a day out with Bernie on one of his mystery tours in the heart of the highland glens. We do the driving and the chatting and you will be introduced to places that are off the beaten track.
This is our 17th year of running Photographic, Fly fishing, Natural History and History tours.
This area of the highlands has a unique variety of habitats all in a relatively small area attracting the wildlife, some of which turn pure white in winter. Species such as the Osprey fly here from West Africa to rear their young, and we are always on the lookout for Golden Eagles and other birds of prey and the large mammals, red in colour.
We show you the beautiful views known to the locals, (and others).
We travel through part of Monarch of the Glen country, places you may have seen on the B.B.C television series. The identification of the outside filming locations has resulted in a household competition for us and many of our friends can be spotted in the series.
Then the history, Scandinavians the Picts, the Irish, and Normans.
The clans and their way of life centuries ago, their support for the Royal House of Stewart and the Scottish claim for independence.
It’s tales of Glen Coe and Culloden, and General Wade and his military roads, which have now become an attraction to walkers and ramblers. We tell you of the people who lived here and their association with their chiefs and where and how they lived.
