New Richmond house was built as a hotel in a once thriving lumber and railroad town. Situated on the Kalamazoo river, The New Richmond House enjoys an expansive view of the river and its winding course to the West.
New Richmond was first a lumber town then a railroad town. Later, it found success in the tourist industry in the late eighteen hundreds. It was the hub for train and steamer traffic to Douglas and Saugatuck with stagecoach service to Holland.
It was also the site of an early trading post before 1836, making New Richmond one of the oldest settlements in the area. The Old Allegan Road was a Native American trail and the river an important trade route.
The formerely forgotten town of New Richmond has suddenly become a hub of energetic activity in the past year. It's been reborn into a charming destination that's right near all of Southwest Michigan's favorite attractions.
The former New Richmond Hotel is now The New Richmond House. It was restored and updated as a weekly & weekend rental lodge in 1999. The Old Church to the North of the house is available for larger parties, receptions or other events. The old Post Office next door plans to be open this year as a gift shop and historic destination. as well as offering snacks and refreshments on its covered front walk.
