| This site is a reconstruction of an original log cabin called the Gatekeeper’s Cabin because it was the home of the water master who controlled the flow of water out of Lake Tahoe. Get an insight into Tahoe’s history at this museum which showcases the days when Lake Tahoe was inhabited by natives and has on display Native American baskets, resort memorabilia, historical photographs, clothing, oral histories, maps, newspapers and artifacts.
The Marion Steinbach Indian Basket Museum was made a part of Gatekeeper’s Museum few years back and this shows the varied interests pursued by Marion Steinbach after who the museum has been named. Here you will find on display over 800 utilitarian and fine baskets collected over a period of time from 85 tribes throughout California and western North America. The museums operate from May 1 to June 15, from June 16 to Aug 31, from Sep 1 – Sep 30 and in weekends in the month of October. The admission fee for adults is $3, $2 for seniors and $1 for kids between the age of 6 and 12. Members and children under the age of 5 are allowed free entry. |
