    Skiing
    Rather than flocking to the usual skiing destinations, why not pick Crested Butte as your next skiing destination. Scenic vistas, champaign powder and great skiing have given Crested Butte the title of ‘Colorado’s Best Corduroy’. Thousand plus acres of terrain offers enough skiing opportunities to skiers of all levels including beginners, intermediate and experts. There are 121 trails out of which 23% is for beginners, 57% for intermediate level and 20% for advanced skiers. Crested Butte has the summit elevation at 12,162 ft with the longest run of 2.6 miles. There are total 15 lifts that operate from 9 AM to 4 PM. The price of the tickets varies according to the number of days and can range from $74, which is for one day to $462, which is valid for 7 out of 10 days.
     
    Winter Sports
    Whether it is skiing, snowshoeing, sledding or tubing – Nordic Ski Center is your one stop destination for all kinds of winter sports. Participate in a half day or a full day ski or snowshoe tour that costs $50 per person and starts at 9 AM or opt for a romantic moonlit tour which costs $15 per person. You can enjoy sledding for free, all you need to do is rent a sled for just $5 and get ready for a swirling ride on the snow. The Nordic Ski Center also has an outdoor ice rink, which is open to the public from early December to late February. Skates are available for rent for $6 for adults and $4 for kids. A new superpipe, terrain park and a tubing hill at Crested Butte ski resort ensure you experience more adventure while tubing, sledding, snowmobiling and snowshoeing.
     
    Mountain Biking

    Crested Butte is a popular destination for mountain biking and you will come across a variety of trails suiting every skill level and leading to some of the most panoramic vistas.  There are a number of biking roads providing mellow rides for beginners such as the Pittsburg trail which takes you through the Slate River Road to the old Pittsburg Town site and it measures 16 miles round trip. The other trail called the Lower Loop is a 10 mile round trip and is considered to be one of Crested Butte’s most popular trails.

    If you are an intermediate level biker, then you have plenty to look forward to as there are quite a few trails catering to this particular segment. Snodgrass is one of the most known trails which is a 10 miles round trip and features scenic vistas and is perfect for viewing wildflowers. A local favorite is the Strand Hill which is a 17 miles round trip and is ideal for single track riding. Another great trail for intermediate level is the 20 mile round trip trail of Farris Creek that treats you to some of the most breathtaking views as well. The expert level bikers can challenge their skills on the Reno/Flag/Bear trail, which is a 22 miles round trip and a combination of the Reno Divide, Flag and Bear Creek trails. Difficult yet very enjoyable is the 24 miles round trip Trail 401 and is best suited to single track bikers.

     
    Fishing
    The anglers can look forward to entrapping many fine catches such as rainbow trout, trout brown, brook trout and cutthroat in the crystal clear waters of the Gunnison River, Taylor River and East River.  Other popular mountain rivers for fishing are Blue Mesa Reservoir, Morrow Point Reservoir and Pac Man Pond, which is a favorite with kids. Crested Butte, an ideal place for fishing, offers a huge variety of new fish released each year from hatcheries. Appreciate the scenic vistas and hundreds of miles of scenic waterways while waiting for the fish to catch the bait. The best time of the year to fish is from April through October.
     
    Hiking

    Hiking is the ideal way to observe the pristine beauty of Crested Butte. Discover the beautiful forests, wildflowers, streams, lakes, wildlife and mountains laced along these trails.

      Crested Butte Summit Trail
      1.25 miles long, this particular trail is ideal for hikers of moderate to difficult skill level. The trail is well marked and leads to the summit of Crested Butte and on the way you will come across some of the most stunning vistas. Trailhead is the starting point of the hike and to get there you would need to buy tickets from the ski area ticket office, follow a walkway and then take a ride on the Silver Queen Chairlift to get to the trailhead. You have the option of hiking down the 6 mile long mountain trail or taking a ride down the chairlift.

      Snodgrass Trail
      Taking you through fields of blooming wildflowers, aspen and pine groves is the 3 mile Snodgrass Trail, which is suited to hikers of moderate skill levels. The trailhead is situated on the left side of Gothic Road, which is two miles past the Mt. Crested Butte ski area. At the trailhead cross over the fence that directly leads you to Snodgross Road. After 0.5 miles the trail intersects with a road, turns left from where you need to follow the trail to the Washington Gulch Road. This trail is closed for grazing in July and August. Do watch out for ‘stop sign’ closures.

      Upper Loop Trail
      Known as the Upper Loop Trail, this is perfect for easy and moderate hikers and is 3.4 miles long. To reach this trail you would need to travel east from Mt. Crested Butte and then turn south on the Hunter Hill Road for 1 mile. There you will find the trailhead marked at the switchback. This trail gives you the option of several trail choices once you cover the 1.5 mile long distance from the Crested Butte Country Club. Among the various trail choices, one takes to Crested Butte, the second one leads to the Country Club and the third one is for the Brush Creek Road.

      Upper Upper Loop Trail
      While the above trail was for skill levels easy to moderate, this trail is suited to moderate and difficult skill levels. It is 2.2 miles long and is also accessible from the Hunter Hill Road. At approximately 1.5 miles from Crested Butte Country Club, you would need to turn left onto the Upper Upper Loop Trail. This trail ends at Brush Creek Road on the southern side of Crested Butte Mountain and from there you can turn right to return to town.
     
    White Water Rafting
    Colorado, with its unlimited opportunities for white water rafting, is justly known as the Whitewater Capital of the World. There are raft trips available for all levels. For a pulsating experience, try out white water rafting on the Taylor River in the Gunnison Valley of Colorado. Rejuvenate your body and mind with various types of river experiences. There are experts available to guide you for outfits and rafting. You can enjoy a multi-day or a couple of hours ride.
