Sights and Attractions in Dauphin Island

 
The whole island is a bird sanctuary, and especially during the spring and fall you can see different types of birds on their migratory trips. Other attractive sights worth visiting are Fort Gaines (a historic civil war fort), the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, Audubon Bird Sanctuary and a number of boat launch sites, the beautiful beaches and various parks. You can also take a car ferry ride across Mobile Bay to visit the Gulf Shores, water parks, outlet malls, etc.

    Historic Fort Gains

    Visit this historic Fort Gains in Alabama, which had to surrender to Admiral Farragut’s fleet on August 8, 1864. During World War II, the fort was used as a camp site for the Alabama National Guard and a base for U.S. The fort is operational from 9AM to 5PM and there’s a nominal fee charged on admission. For group tour you would need to take prior appointment.

     
    Audubon Bird Sanctuary
    Situated on a 14 mile long barrier island off the Alabama Gulf coast, the bird lovers will have a field day spotting their favorite birds in this beautiful Audubon Bird Sanctuary. The sanctuary comprises of 164 acres of maritime forests and marshes including a lake, swamp and a beach. Every year in spring, the neotropical migrant birds fly across the Gulf from Central and South America to halt and rest at this beautiful sanctuary before they return flight each fall. The sanctuary is open in daylight hours and admission to the park is free.
     
    Estuarium
    A visit to the Estuarium promises you a great learning experience as you get to discover and know about the four main habitats of coastal Alabama. The 10,000 sq foot Exhibit Hall and the Living Marsh Boardwalk showcases a variety of plants, animals and other natural resources through interesting visual and interactive exhibits. The Estuarium has disabled access. The cost of the admission fee for adults is $7, for seniors it is $6 and for children between the age of 5 and 18 it is $4. During summers it is open from Monday to Saturday from 9AM to 6PM and on Sundays from 12PM to 6PM. During winters it is open from Monday to Saturday from 9AM to 5PM and on Sundays from 1PM to 5PM.
     
    Aloe Bay Landing Park
    Aloe Bay Landing Park is a small waterfront park located in the industrial section of the Island. It is a great spot to look at coming and going crab and shrimp boats and the offshore gas industry work boats. At the park, picnic benches and tables are also provided. Shore of the Aloe Bay is an excellent dawn and dusk spot where Waterfowl including a Red-throated Loon may be seen occasionally. This is an excellent spot for herons and black-crowned night-herons flying from roosts in the nearby trees at dusk especially during spring.
