An annual event, the Fort Myers Beach Lion Club Shrimp Festival celebrates the importance of Fort Myers Beach as the home of the largest shrimp fleets in the United States. This event is generally held in the second week of March and coincides with the full moon day as that’s the day when the shrimp fleets return to the docks with their booty.
Though, the major features of this event include a 5K run, and a parade with marchers and floats from various area organizations, the main focus is on food, especially various shrimp delicacies and other dishes. Live entertainment at Times Square makes the festivities even more enjoyable. At the end of the weekend, the event is officially brought to an end with Blessing of the Fleet ceremony in which as the name suggests, the fleet is blessed by a priest who offers prayers for the success and prosperity of the shrimp fleet for the year ahead.
