    Fort Morgan
Fort Morgan, located on the western end of the peninsula, is Gulf Shores’ link to history. It was used by the Spanish in the 1500s and rebuilt in the early 1800s as protection against the Native Americans. On your trip to the Fort, guides and enactors will tell you about the rich heritage of the region and the Fort’s role in preserving it. Even today’s visitors can imagine the summer of 1864 when Confederate and Union naval forces fought for control of the harbor. To help with this, Civil War reenactments are staged at Fort Morgan every five years during the first weekend in August.

    Gulf Shores Museum
If you happen to be a history buff, then Gulf Shores Museum is the place for you. Unfold the historical past of the Shores, when people used ancient methods for fishing and forecasting hurricanes. View the several intriguing exhibits, some of which will take you through the devastations and destructions caused by the hurricanes.

Step out of history into the lush greenery at the park, where you can even spot some native birds and colorful butterflies. There is no admission charge. The museum is open from Tuesday through Friday, from 10 AM to noon and 1 PM to 5 PM. You can also visit the museum from 10 AM to 2 PM on Saturdays.

    Mobile Bay's Battleship Memorial Park
Mobile Bay’s Battleship Memorial Park has been home to the USS Alabama since 1965, hosting visitors who learn of its medal-winning service in WWII. The park is also home to the submarine USS Drum. The nearby museum showcases a selection of military aircraft and a realistic flight simulator.

    Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo
Alabama Coastal Zoo in Gulf Shores is home to more than 250 animals. The Zoo has viewing decks that let you get a close-up view of the animals. The Zoo also houses reptiles and birds. Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo remains closed on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas only. The hours of operation include 9 AM to 4 PM. Admission charges include adults (12-54) $8.80, seniors (55+) $6.60, children (3-12) $6.00, while children 2 and under are allowed for free.

    Fort Gaines
Directly west across the water from Fort Morgan is Fort Gaines. Located on Dauphin Island, Fort Gaines was overtaken by the Union during the Civil War. Reenactments of these battles at Fort Gaines are staged on various days October-May. The Mobile Bay Ferry runs between Ft. Morgan and Dauphin Island on a regular, published schedule. The ferry ride makes for a fun trip if you throw in a visit to The Estuarium at Dauphin Island Sea Lab, which features live exhibits of the local marine habitats, and tour of Ft. Gaines.

    Audubon Bird Sanctuary
Audubon Bird Sanctuary on Dauphin Island consists of 164 acres of maritime forest. Several walking trails provide miles of habitat for neo-tropical migrants after their long flight across the Gulf from Central and South America each spring.
