Originally called "Indian Rocks Beach, South Shore" as a way to distinguish itself from Indian Rocks Beach, the town of Indian Shores was incorporated in 1943 and changed its name in 1973. Other attractions include its famous Seabird Sanctuary and even the wonderful Pinellas Trail.
The largest non-profit wild bird hospital in the US, the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary is located in Indian Shores. The sanctuary is dedicated to the rescue, repair, recuperation, and release of sick and injured wild birds. It houses and treats injured pelicans, herons, egrets, owls, hawks and other birds. The sanctuary is famous for its captive breeding program of the Eastern Brown Pelican. Tours are available daily and your entire family will be fascinated to visit the world-famous place.
Park Boulevard Boat Ramp Park
The 6.5-acre boating facility is located on the Intercoastal Waterway and is open to public since June 1989. The facility is open 24 hours a day and features 73 vehicles and trailers parking spaces, 6 boat lanes, 3 floating docks, restrooms and night lighting is also available.
Tiki Gardens - Indian Shores Beach Access
The 9.9-acre park site is dedicated to public and was opened in 1995 to them. Facilities include Phase 1 with space for 120 vehicles parking area, restroom facilities, benches, a water fountain, beach showers, landscaping, and a pedestrian crossing light at Gulf Boulevard. Phase II provides another landscaped parking lot containing 50 additional vehicles parking space. Also features outside showers and swimming pool.
Pinellas Trail
The 34-mile long Pinellas Trail offers a unique greenway corridor linking some of Pinellas County’s most picturesque parks, scenic coastal areas and residential neighborhoods. While at Indian Shores, you can use the 5-mile stretch of trail from Taylor Park in Largo to Seminole Park in Seminole. So what are you waiting for? Grab your in-line skates, put on your jogging shoes or hop on your bicycle and head to the Pinellas Trail.
While traveling along the Trail, outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy deep glades of ancient live oaks trailing Spanish moss, quiet waterways and tidal streams with all varieties of land and water birds. The Trail is a priceless haven in a busy, highly urbanized environment, where Trail-goers safely breeze along. The Trail is only open during daylight hours and alcoholic beverages are prohibited. Pedestrians and handicapped have the right of way, wheelchairs should use the pedestrian lanes and electric handicap wheelchairs are permitted.
