    Fishing

Florida Bay is the Mecca for the fishing enthusiasts. The water is mainly shallow, at places even less than five feet and contains some of the finest variety of fish including tarpon, bonefish, trout, redfish, snook, jack crevalle, permit and mangrove snapper, among others. Some narrow cuts serve as pathways to several small islands and ‘flats’, which are shallow areas with usually 6-12 inches deep. You can fish here with live baits consisting mainly of shrimp and crabs, on a light tackle, which is 8-10 pound test line. The fishing veterans may try their luck trolling for barracuda or bottom fish for a shark. Barracuda can run very fast and can also fight with sharks while dodging them with their quick jumping and diving. You may be lucky to catch a nurse shark up to five feet long or bonnethead shark up to three feet long. Fly-fishing, bonefish stalking and tarpon fishing are favorite activities during the months of April through August.

    Tarpon Feeding
Tarpon feeding is another interesting pastime in Islamorada. Just let go the fish bait off your hand and the ‘Silver King’ looms up in a silver and green flash through a powerful upheaval of water to catch it. Or simply toss bait among them and the water churns violently as these sea monsters and the pelicans above compete with each other to catch the booty. The spectacle is to be seen to be believed.

    Diving and Snorkeling
Being the sport fishing capital of the world, Islamorada naturally holds a top slot as a vacation destination among the divers and snorkelers because of the massive and varied marine life. The high profile coral reefs and broad ledges sheltering huge quantities of French grunt, goatfish, angelfish, green moray eels, nurse sharks that frisk around them are a visitor’s delight. Islamorada also boasts a wide variety of shallow coral reefs, mini walls, shipwrecks and many other types of marine life for those interested in snorkel to explore.

Some of the interesting attractions include The Eagle, a 287 feet long ship, which was deliberately, sunk under 110 depth of water. It lies enveloped within a colorful patina under the crust of sponge and coral inhabited by huge population of grunt, tarpon and jack. The Davis Reef, Alligator Reef, Conch Wall, Crocker Wall and Pickles Reef lying at various depths are the other favorite diving haunts each with unique characteristics and offering irresistible motivation for divers to explore them.

    Eco-Tours
Take an eco-tour to explore the abundant wildlife of Islamorada. On route, you will be able to spot the herons, ibis, egrets, pelicans, colorful fish, sea turtles and occasionally the dolphin or the rare manatee during the low tide. Mid day is the best time to see colorful fish, sponges, corals, mangrove, seagrass beds, and hardbottom (sponge beds) as the sun light penetrates the clear waters exposing the aqueous life beneath it.

Some eco-tours also include marine ecology programs such as “critter getter”. As a participant, you are provided nets, buckets and gloves and then just wade through the shallow water areas to catch interesting tiny sea animals such as sea stars, sea cucumbers, sea horses, snails and so on. You can then place your catch under the magnifying glasses and learn about their camouflage, defense mechanisms, feeding, habitat, symbiotic relationships, and phylum classifications. The eco tours also provide great opportunities for watching the huge variety of birds which include the mangrove cuckoo, magnificent frigate bird, palm warbler, reddish egret, osprey and so on. The eco-tours are a great way to view dolphins and manatee popping for minutes together and displaying aerobics with their silky and agile bodies as they roll, jump and cavort from one side to another.
