The best way to start your vacations will be by paying tribute to the never say die spirit of the habitants of Islamorada who braved the devastating winds of 200 miles per hour on Labor Day, September 2, 1935 for many hours and yet refused to quit. The monument contains the cremated remains of around 300 people within the tiled crypt. The monument, made of native keystone, depicts the coconut palm tress bending before the inescapable fury of the storm while the waters strike at their roots.

The other important landmark is the Florida Keys History of Diving Museum, which houses a 300-foot mural painted by the artists David Dunleavy and Guy Harvey depicting the endangered species and the marine wild life. The museum is famous for its vast collection of artifacts, antiques, books, documents, photographs and oral accounts pertaining to diving and the importance of the Keys in this context. The museum is open from Tuesdays through Sundays from 10 AM to 5 PM. The cost of the tickets for adults is $12, for children between the age of 5 and 12 it is $6, for seniors it is $11 and free for children under the age of 5.
