| Outer Banks is famous for its fabulous lighthouses throughout the United States. One of these is the 150-feet high, Bodie Island Lighthouse, which you can explore once you are here. Kill Devil Hills is also famous for the first flight of Wright Brothers. The 60-feet high, Wright Brothers National Memorial, which marks their achievement, is definitely worth a visit. |

| Wright Brothers National Memorial |
| The 60-feet high structure marks the achievement of Orville and Wilbur Wright for their first 12 seconds flight, about a century ago. The National Park Service maintains this memorial and the visitor centre here. Highlights include full-sized models of their 1902 glider and 1903 flyer, replicas of their camp, workshop and hangar, and various exhibits and programs. An entrance fee of $3.00 per person is charged and admission for individuals 16 and under is free. The park opens 9 AM – 6 PM in summers and 9 AM – 5 PM the rest of the year. |

| Bodie Island Lighthouse |
| The third beacon to be built on the infamous “Graveyard of the Atlantic” was completed in 1872. There are 214 steps to reach the top of this black and white horizontally striped lighthouse. The 150 feet high, Bodie Island Lighthouse is located off NC Route 12, south of Nags Head, which is very close to Kill Devil Hills. The lighthouse is not open to public; however, the keeper’s quarters serve as a visitor center. There is no admission fee for the visitor centre. |

| This nature reserve is preserved in its original form. Nags Head Woods Preserve is one of the very few maritime forests left now. The preserve also features a five-mile Sweetgum Swamp Trail, open for hiking to public. |

| Kitty Hawk Woods |
| The 1877.2 acres of maritime deciduous swamp, marsh and forest, Kitty Hawk Woods is a perfect place for a daytime trip from Kill Devil Hills. The forest is located on a series of low ridges and swales, thanks to the tidal exchange of salty ocean and fresh sound waters. Located in the centre of Kitty Hawk extremely close to Kill Devil Hills, the area supports a huge variety of wildlife. Upland areas support gray fox, raccoon and white-tailed deer. The marsh areas support nutria, muskrat, river otter, and a high density of reptiles and amphibians. The woods are home to warblers, woodpeckers, hawks, wrens and other songbirds. Wood ducks inhabit the deeper swales and herons, egrets, geese, ducks, swans and rails may be found in the marsh. Visitors can go hiking on the designated hiking trails and you can even go for horseback riding, provided you clean you behind your horses. The Reserve is closed to the public after sunset. |
