The rugged mountains of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area back Malibu’s beaches. Much of Malibu’s shoreline is privately owned, so it can be quite difficult to find a stretch of accessible sand, but there are some very pleasant state beaches as well.
Just north of the airport, Santa Monica is one of the city's most appealing neighborhoods. The heart of Santa Monica is the 3rd St Promenade, which is a lively pedestrian mall with shops and restaurants. The Santa Monica pier, built between 1908 and 1921, is the oldest pier on the West Coast, and hosts many carnivals and attractions.
Venice Beach is another frequented attraction. Inspired by the famous European town of Venice, the area had a number of gondolas and canals to begin with. The number has gone down now, but the place still retains its charms. |
