Horseback Riding
Take a horseback ride along miles of unspoiled sand and surf, or if you want a more private escape, take a guided horseback ride through a beautiful mountain redwood forest in Elk Mountains. Some services offer daily horseback rides while others can accommodate larger groups. Most only allow children over 6 years of age.

Canoeing and Kayaking
Paddling the Big River, the only major undeveloped navigable estuary in Northern California, is quite a thrill. Canoe and kayak rentals are available for hourly and daily fees.

Hiking and Biking
Walking is the best way to explore Mendocino, as there are several back roads, abandoned logging roads and trails to explore. Hikers and bikers will enjoy bluff-top excursions to view seabirds, the seasonal gray whale migration and spring wildflowers.
Rent a mountain bike and cycle along the coast or head to the Redwood and Fern canyons. You can also explore the Van Damme or Russian Gulch state parks. |

Old Mill Farm
Since 1974, Old Mill Farm has been familiarizing city folk with farm life. The unique turn-of-the-century homestead is surrounded by the Jackson State Demonstration Forest and the Mendocino Woodlands State Park. The farm serves as an example of the principles of sustainable living by using sustainable agriculture, viticulture, silviculture, animal husbandry and soil science.

Mendocino National Forest
The Mendocino National Forest is 65-miles long and 35-miles wide. The Forest's federally owned land offer a variety of recreational opportunities, like hiking, boating, fishing, hunting, nature study, photography and off-road vehicle use.

Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) Trails
The Mendocino National Forest is a great place for ORV fans. It is important to note, though, that within the forest it is prohibited to operate or use a vehicle off a forest developed road. Also prohibited is any vehicle not meeting the California Vehicle Code for highway operation on forest developed roads.
