Sights and Attractions in Murphy

One of the greatest attractions of this region is the Apalachia Lake, located in the Appalachian Mountains of Cherokee County. This 9.8 miles long lake with 31 miles of shoreline and over 1,000 acres of water has been designated a Wilderness Waterway, preserved by USFS Nantahala National Quiet secluded coves and inlets on Apalachia Lake are excellent for swimming, boating, and fishing or sightseeing. Other sites and attractions worth visiting while staying at one of the Murphy cabins and Murphy vacation rentals are the Cherokee Co. Historical Museum, Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, and the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest.

Cherokee Co. Historical Museum

The museum has an interesting display of exhibits consisting of a collection of over 2000 Cherokee Indian artifacts, assembled over a period of seventy years by local resident Arthur Palmer. Also of great interest are the 500 collectible dolls, donated in 1995 by local resident Louise Kilgore. You will also find here a unique collection of antique farm implements and vintage household items, mostly hand-made used by the early pioneer settlers in Cherokee County.

Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

Enjoy a terrific train journey through the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad and experience the mystique of a by gone era. The 53 miles journey takes you through spectacular regions, two tunnels and 25 bridges and across river gorges. The ever-changing landscape and vegetation on route to the Great Smoky Mountains is simply breathtaking. You can choose from a number of round trip excursions that depart from the depots in Dillsboro and Bryson City.

Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest

Around 45 minutes drive from Murphy is situated the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest. A part of the Nantahala National Forest, the memorial forest is a popular recreational site consisting of interesting hiking and biking trails, scintillating waterfalls, and great picnic spots. Trails worth checking out are The Appalachian Trail and the Whiteside Mountain Trail. The magnificent forest is home to towering trees some of which are around 400 years old. Then there are the enormous yellow-poplars that are 20 feet in circumference and a height of about 100 feet. The floor covered with wildflowers, ferns, and moss-covered logs from fallen trees adds to the serenity and tranquility of the surroundings.
