Newport offers endless attractions, which you cannot cover in just a weekend; you can take the liberty of a longer vacation to get a real taste of the area. Some of the most popular and outstanding attractions include Head Lighthouse, Yaquina Head Interpretive Center and Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area.

    Yaquina Bay Lighthouse

    Built in 1871, Yaquina Bay Lighthouse being the Newport’s oldest structure is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It was officially restored as a working lighthouse and an aid to navigation on December 7, 1996 by the Oregon Parks & Recreation Department. You can climb up the 161-feet high lighthouse to enjoy bird’s eye views of the city and the ocean. Admission Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is free to all the visitors, though donations are expected and accepted.

    It is open for guide or self-guide tours, school groups, or any other organized tours. Private guided-tours can be arranged by Yaquina Bay Lighthouse authorities, for which $20 is charged for a single person, $10 each for 2 to 4 persons, and $ 5 each for 5 to 8 people. Visiting hours during the summers (from Memorial Day weekend to the end of September) are 11 AM to 5 PM; while in winters (from October to Memorial Day) are 12 noon until 4 PM. The Lighthouse is open every day except on holidays such as Christmas, New Year and Thanksgiving.

     
    Oregon Coast Aquarium

    The 29-acre facility, Oregon Coast Aquarium is home to over 190 animal species including otters, seals, sea lions, tufted puffins and even a giant octopus. Numerous fish tanks, hands-on exhibits and interactive computers are available, which facilitates visitors to learn and gain a deep understanding about Oregon's coastal life and wetlands. The Aquarium even features 6-acres of cliffs, rocky caves, tide pools and nature trails. You can definitely not miss out on the beak whale skeleton, suspended from above 20-feet out here.

    Visited by over 50,000 students annually, Oregon Coast Aquarium even offers educational shows and various learning resources to help students and teachers understand Oregon’s vast coastal wealth. Oregon Coast Aquarium opens throughout the year except on December 25th. Visiting hours from Memorial Day - Labor Day are daily 9 AM until – 6 PM and from Labor Day - Memorial Day are daily 10 AM until 5 PM. Prior reservations are advised especially during the summers. Entrance fee includes $11 for adults (13-64 years,) $ 6.50 for children (3-12 years,) $9.50 for seniors (over 65 years) and children (under 2 years) are free.

     
    Hatfield Marine Science Center
    There since 1965, Hatfield Marine Science Center is the hub of marine-related research at Oregon State University and houses a number of national marine organizations who are into this research. The display ranges from global remote sensing down to the microscopic level. Among many other discoveries, visitors can explore the geology of the ocean floor and discover about coastal geography, including hazards such as tsunamis and earthquakes, or find out the latest advancements made in whale-tracking. At the Center’s demonstrations, you can see tidal animals and even a live octopus in a touch tank. Admission is free of cost and the visiting hours are from 10 AM to 5 PM daily during summers.
     
    Yaquina Head Light

    Oregon's tallest 93 feet tower - Yaquina Head Light is located on a narrow point of land jutting towards the west into the Pacific Ocean north of Newport, at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area. It took approximately one year, and over 370,000 bricks to construct Oregon's tallest lighthouse. Throbbed by over 400,000 vacationers each year, Yaquina Head Light and its amazing natural surroundings have earned the reputation of being the “most-visited lights on the west coast.”

    Entrance fee is charged at Yaquina Head Outstanding Area is $5 per car which includes a 3-day pass. An annual pass may be purchased for $10. Also, the entry for the Incorporate Members of Yaquina Lights is free of cost.
