Templo Mayor, one of Mexico’s most important archeological sites, is a major tourist attraction in Mexico. According to the Mexican legend, once God asked the Aztecs to locate a place where an eagle with a snake in its beak was perched on a cactus so as to build a capital city for Aztecs. This city was destined to be the epicenter of the Aztec Empire. Later on the statue of an Aztec Goddess was also found here during an excavation. This led to further exploration that revealed the Templo Mayor or the Main Temple. Till date, an eagle with a snake in its beak seated on a cactus remains the national symbol of Mexico.
The Templo Mayor Museum boasts of a fantastic collection of historical exhibits dating back 500 years. It contains a detailed scale model of the old city. The museum is situated at the end of the park so that if you want to see it first you should enter the park from the exit. |
