Ponce Inlet area is one of the best for fishing. Species of fishes like blue marlin are found in the Gulf Stream. If you are lucky, then you could even catch some sailfish, dolphin, king mackerel, wahoo and tuna, which are caught on trolled baits. On the bottom around the numerous reefs, grouper and red snapper are the most avidly sought species while the bruising king-size Jack Crevalle and Amberjack provide tackle-busting variety.
Every year in May, the Greater Daytona Beach Striking Fish Tournament is organized. You can rent party boats or private charters, which sail daily from the Ponce Inlet docks. Surf fishing is also a year round sport, where the fishing enthusiasts can get a catch of a variety of fishes like the pompano, whiting, bluefish, redfish, flounder and Jack Crevalle, which are found mostly in the 23-mile stretch of the fishing area. Many varieties of fish are caught from the ocean pier in the heart of Daytona Beach and the Sunglow Pier located at the southern end (Port Orange) of the beach.
There is a daily pier charge, with monthly and seasonal passes are available. Fishing equipment is available on rent. You will also need a fishing license for fresh water, salt water or combination fishing, which is available from the collector’s office, but you can also get the license from many bait-and-tackle shops and sports retailers for a small additional fee. |
