| Guana River State Park |
Located on a barrier island between St. Augustine and Jacksonville, the 2,300-acre Guana River State Park is replete with nature and history. Its topography includes an Atlantic Ocean beach, sand dunes, coastal strand/scrub, estuarine river (Guana River) with associated salt marshes and tidal creeks, maritime hardwood hammock, freshwater depression marshes, pond pine flatwoods and shell mound forest. The park is home to several endangered wildlife species that thrive in this diverse environment. The park attracts the peregrine falcons in early October. Take a day’s program organized by the park and learn about the birds and plants found in the Guana River.
In the park, apart from watching the natural wonders, there are a lot of activities you can explore. With more than 9 miles of trails, hiking and biking are popular. The Guana Lake and Guana River offer opportunities for boating and fishing. Guana Lake is also famous for its crabbing and shrimping. The Guana Dam Use Area (main entrance) is open for fishing all though the day and picnicking is permitted anywhere in the park. The park is open from 8 AM till sundown, all days of the year. |
