Watch the Bird Island within the mangroves, a remote nesting area with a wide variety of native birds, and maybe an occasional alligator or turtle. The cruise gives you the opportunity to see Florida's wildlife at its best. It is located at Rivergate Park on Midport Road in Port St. Lucie. A weekly nature cruise for 1-1½ hours costs $15.

Fishing is the most popular sport in Port St. Lucie. From the Ft. Pierce Inlet, the famous Gulf Stream current is just five to ten miles offshore. Get your hands on channel bass, snook, ladyfish, jack crevalle and trout in the backwaters of the St. Lucie River. Huge bass are abundant in the Savannas. Fishing enthusiasts can also enjoy the challenge of surf fishing, and the excitement of offshore fishing with amazing catches. The North Jetty Park has a private fishing area that is very popular with families with small children. They can spot marine life along the jetty and enjoy the low tide.
South Jetty Park, with its 237-feet of oceanfront, is located on the south of Ft. Pierce Inlet at the end of Seaway Drive. The park provides visitors with restrooms, boardwalk, a 1,200-foot fishing jetty (the longest in Florida) and picnic shelters with grills. You need to have a fishing license to enjoy fishing here. Ft. Pierce Inlet is also very popular for lobster catching, where it provides an excellent breeding ground for lobsters. In addition, the many in-shore reefs with depths ranging from 12-35 feet provide excellent lobster diving and trapping opportunities during the season, which runs from August through end of March. You can rent fishing equipment at various rental shops in the area. |

Scuba diving in Port St. Lucie is an activity for pros as well as beginners. Port St Lucie organizes scuba excursions, from snorkeling to deep-water wrecks, for all ages. The deep water wrecks feature wrecks from the civil war to World War II. You can get as close to the wrecks as you want and see the amazing structures buried deep in the waters. Wrecks are easily accessible and some are just 200 yards off the beach. There are various scuba-training programs for beginners. Equipment and costumes can be bought or rented.
Surfing is also a very exciting water sport for vacationers in this region. New or used surfboards and other accessories can easily be bought or rented. These shops usually give lessons for various water sports for all ages. |

Savannas Preserve State Park, Fort Pierce Inlet State Park and White City Park are areas where you could sight sandhill cranes, wood storks, ibis, various herons and egrets, anhingas and a roseate spoonbill. Manatees are in the river during the cooler months, and can be seen especially at the manatee observation center in downtown Fort Pierce in St. Lucie County. |
