    Avalon State Park
Avalon State Park is located four miles north of Fort Pierce Inlet State Park, via Highway A1A and North Causeway, which is just 11 miles from Port St. Lucie. It is one of the state’s newest seaside parks providing habitat for some of the most endangered species of sea turtles, like the loggerhead, Atlantic green, and leatherback, are found on the beach during spring and summer.

The beach offers a beautiful view of Florida coastline. Take a leisurely stroll and find a variety of seashells. Swim, snorkel or just sunbathe and relax on the beach. Swimming is permitted here, however caution must be exercised when you enter the ocean in the park vicinity. There are several ship wrecks and other underwater obstacles, made of concrete and steel, deposited offshore by the United States Navy during World War II for training purposes. While some of these obstacles have been removed, those that remain can prove dangerous to the unsuspecting swimmer or surfer.

This is also an excellent area for bird-watching. Spot sandhill cranes, herons, ospreys, hawks, black ducks, yellow-rumped sparrows, red-bellied woodpeckers, and downy woodpeckers. You will also find many native trees, including the Gumbo Limbo, Red Bay, Live Oak and Mangrove.

Avalon State Park is an excellent place for fishing where you can easily get your hands on bluefish, snook, red/black drums, pompano, permit and whiting, although non-residents need to get a fishing license before fish in this area. Snorkeling is also a popular activity in this park and the waters remain clear throughout the year allowing you to experience the glory of the underwater world.
