As colorful and fascinating as its natural beauty is the culture of Kauai and large part of it has been preserved in the Kauai Museum. Housed in a Greco-Roman building, this museum narrates the story of Kauai through historical and natural history collection, works of art, textiles and rare collections of Hawaiian and Pacific cultural materials. You are surely to discover a variety of artifacts ranging from marine shells, land snails and sea otter pelt to relics such as tooth necklace, game stones, bowls and vessels, Asian dolls, WWII memorabilia, Hawaiian saddles and plantation era furnishings. The museum is open from 9 AM to 4 PM Monday through Friday and on Saturdays it stays open from 10 AM to 4 PM. The admission fee for adults is $5, $4 for seniors, $3 for students and $1 for children between the age of 6 to 12.

A visit to the Kauai Children’s Discovery Museum is must for your kids as they can learn about Hawaiian culture through an interesting mix of interactive exhibits. Let them interact with the local children; have a great time playing 7,000 sq foot play center; climb up to the tree house to read books and try their hands at playing various Hawaiian musical instruments. The admission fee to the museum is $3.50 for kids and $4.50 for adults. The play center is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM.

Be prepared to be overwhelmed as you step in to take a tour of 17 acres of lush green gardens and rain forests. Set against the majestic backdrop of towering peaks, the Limahuli Garden is a feast for the senses where you will come across exotic endangered plants and ancient lava rock terraces. You can choose from a self-guided tour or a guided tour and the duration can vary anywhere between 1 to 2.5 hours. The tours are conducted Tuesday through Friday and on Sundays from 9:30 AM to 4 PM. It is advisable you wear comfortable walking shoes, carry mosquito repellant or wear long pants and carry bottled water.

Spread across 240 acres, Na ‘Aina Kai meaning ‘Lands by the Sea’ in Hawaiian is one of its kind botanical gardens. Here you are bound to find some of the most distinctive species of flora and fauna and their uniqueness is further accentuated by the presence of waterfalls, pools, arbors, colonnades, gazebos, a maze and a lagoon. The gardens epitomize the perfect blend of nature and man’s creation as nature’s splendor is complimented by more than 70 bronze sculptures. You can take your pick from a host of tours that can range anywhere between 1.5 hours to 5 hours. The fee can vary between $25 and $70 depending on the duration of the tour. It is recommended to make your reservation in advance as it is open only from Tuesdays to Thursdays from 8 AM to 5 PM.
