| Beaches |
With around forty beaches and 100 miles of coastline, Puerto Vallarta, is a natural favorite with the beach buffs who can indulge in all beach activities ranging from whale watching and parasailing to bungee jumping over the Pacific, windsurfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, jet skiing or fishing. The waters are usually calm and are perfect for year round swimming. The beaches in the northern part of the island including the Playa de Oro beach with a few rocky areas interspersed in it are great favorites for water sports, catching a wave and windsurfing. Playa de los Muertos is the most popular beach of Puerto Vallarta. Bustling with activity and the sun worshippers, the beach lined with hotels and restaurants is the perfect venue to catch the Vallarta sunset. Playa de Mismaloya, towards the south of the town, is fairly secluded and is a great place to avoid the usual holiday crowd. In fact, the beaches are becoming a fashionable destination for couples seeking to take their wedding vows in unique and exotic settings. |

The rocky bay at Quimixto, about 32 km south of Puerto Vallarta, accessible by boat, is another favorite of the snorkels.
A popular snorkeling destination is Punta de Mita, about 80 km in the north where the Marietas Islands, with lava tubes and caves feature at least 10 good spots to snorkel and dive. The area presents challenging opportunities for advanced divers. You can look for manta rays, several species of eel, sea turtles, and colorful fish. Winter is a good time for viewing orcas or humpback whales in the underwater pinnacles and caves around El Morro Islands. |
