| Hunting and Fishing |
Saltwater or freshwater, surf or pier, inshore or offshore charters, or be it fly or sound fishing, there’s no lack of fishing opportunities on this stretch of barrier islands. The Outer Banks offers some of the country’s best fishing options.
If you use cut-up fish for bait, then your catch would comprise small bluefish, striped bass, trout, flounder, skates, small sharks and puppy drum (the small red drum). When you’re using bloodworms or shrimp, then it would be spot, croaker, sea mullet, sand perch, pigfish, small black drum and pompano.
Hunting and fishing, with a permit, are allowed on most of the Alligator River Wildlife Refuge during state seasons and in accordance with refuge and state regulations. Game to hunt includes whitetail deer, squirrels, rabbits, quail and mourning doves. Regulations for hunting and fishing may change annually, so contact the Refuge office prior to visiting. At present, a saltwater fishing license is not required. However, if you’re thinking of freshwater fishing or hunting, then a license is required. |

Outer Banks has been dubbed as the “Wind Surfing Capital of the East Coast,” because it provides wonderful wind surfing conditions for most of the year. Moderate temperatures, constant and steady winds, shallow calm waters and rolling ocean waves, all combine to make it one of the most amiable destinations for wind surfing. Different shops and agencies provide lessons, clinics and equipment for rental or purchase.
Quickly becoming a favorite surfing spot, the area offers numerous surfing opportunities for novices and veterans. Warm, calm waters of the summer months are ideal for the beginners, while fall with its peak hurricane season presents a challenge for experienced surfers. A friendly vibe with good surf will surely make it a memorable experience for you. |
