| Fishing |
The sea and the lakes of the Gulf Coast attract anglers from around the world. At Destin, “the world's luckiest fishing village”, and Panama City Beach, you can go on fishing trips as an individual or in groups, on an hourly or daily basis. The backwater bayous of the Choctawhatchee Bay and numerous coastal lakes also provide excellent fishing and boating opportunities.
Many species of sport fish are caught in the Emerald Coast waters off the beach and jetties. Fishing from these fixed locations with live bait, frozen bait, and artificial baits will produce pompano, whiting, channel bass, sheepshead, blue runner, bluefish, sail cat, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, cobia, bonito, jack crevalle.
Fishing in the Choctawhatchee Bay and its bayous is good the year round. You can expect to catch speckled sea trout, sheepshead, white trout, channel bass, red fish, sail cat, bluefish, and flounder; also, blue crabs can be found along the shore of the bay. The inshore trolling season runs from March through November. Most of Destin's fishing fleet specializes in deep-sea bottom fishing. The bottom fishing in Destin is good year round. Boats are available for charter half day, all day, and overnight. The catch you can hope for includes grouper, amber jack, scamp, triggerfish, snapper and cobia.
Offshore trolling takes place past the 50 fathom curve (300 feet), about 27 miles southwest of Destin. This trolling area has proven very productive for white marlin, blue marlin, sailfish, dolphin and Wahoo. Although billfish have been caught from April to December, August through October are the most productive months. |

The crystal-clear water is great for snorkeling, kayaking, surfing and windsurfing. Destin boat rentals rent pontoon boats, jet skis, and have dolphin tours and parasailing. Wave runners are a popular rental, charging $50 for an hour and $90 for two hours. A photo ID card is required for the driver. Dolphin tours are organized on wave runners. Each wave runner carries 3 people and the charge for this really neat trip is $80 per wave runner. If you plan to operate a wave runner, be sure and bring a Photo ID card with you.
Parasailing is probably the sport most visitors are interested in. Parasailing trips cost the single parasailer $45 and a double parasailer $90. |
