Sarasota is the cultural oasis of Florida’s west coast. Art museums are plentiful, but Sarasota has many other attractions that may interest you, from marine life laboratories to mineral springs, you will find so much to do in Sarasota that you won’t want to leave.

    The Museum of Asian Art
    The Museum of Asian Art is an exploration of ancient Asia. Set within a vault, 2,000 years of history are represented in the exhibition of artifacts from China, Thailand, Cambodia, Nepal and Myanmar. Admission is $5, but members, students with a valid ID and children under 12 are admitted free. The museum is open from Wednesday to Friday, 11 AM to 5 PM and is closed on holidays.
     
    Art Center Sarasota
    Art Center Sarasota is the hub of the Gulf Coast region contemporary art scene, presenting a broad spectrum of workshops, classes and exhibitions that emphasize arts education programs and exhibitions. Gallery hours are 10 AM to 4 PM from Tuesday to Saturday. The gallery is closed on Sunday and Monday.
     
    Towles Court
    Towles Court is a living/working artist colony. Included in the colony are painters, potters, designers, digital, and healing artists. Third Friday Gallery Art Walks are held year-round from 6-10 PM on the 3rd Friday of each month. Guided studio tours are available in February, March and April. The tours include artist demonstrations and lunch for groups of 12 or more. Group reservations are required. The best time to visit is Tuesday – Saturday, from 11 AM to 4 PM. Towles Court is located at Adams Lane and US 301.
     
    The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art
    The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art is recognized as the official State Art Museum of Florida. The museum offers over 20 galleries of European, Asian and American art. The Circus Museum displays artifacts recounting the history of the Ringling Brothers Circus. The estate also features a wonderful rose garden.
     
    Gamble Plantation and Mansion
    This antebellum plantation, home of Major Robert Gamble, was headquarters of a sugar plantation. It is the only surviving plantation house in south Florida. It is believed that the Confederate Secretary of State, Judah P. Benjamin, took refuge on the plantation after defeat of the Confederacy. In 1925, the United Daughters of the Confederacy donated the house and 16 acres to the state. Today the mansion is furnished as a mid-19th century plantation. Admission is free. Guided tours are available from Thursday to Monday at 9:30 AM, 10:30 AM, 1 PM, 2 PM, 3 PM and 4 PM. Tours are $5 for adults and $3 for children. Picnic tables are available on the grounds. The estate’s visitor center is open from 8AM-4:30 PM, Thursday through Monday. The plantation is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
