| Fishing |
Whether you hire a charter boat or fish right off the bridge, St. George Island and Apalachicola Bay offer some of the best fishing in Florida. Anywhere along the beach, you can fish for trout, whiting, pompano and redfish. Other common species include cobia, sheepshead, flounder, Spanish mackerel, black drum, bluefish, striped bass, large mouth bass, jack crevalle, tarpon, grouper, snapper, king mackerel, triple tail and amberjack.
St. George Island State Park offers surf and bay fishing, which may yield catches of flounder, redfish, sea trout, whiting or Spanish mackerel. There are 2 boat ramps available in the park. Entry for the east end of the park is $6 per person without a park pass. Children under 12 are free. This area is accessible by 4-wheel drive vehicle only, via a 5.5-mile dirt track.
Bob Sikes Cut is a channel, which separates St. George Island from Little St. George Island. It is known for being a great place to catch flounder, redfish, sheepshead, pompano and shark, but it is only available to persons staying in the “Plantation” or by special arrangement with a property owner there.
The bridge at Cat Point is another favorite spot for many anglers.
In Florida, freshwater fishing requires a license, but saltwater fishing does not as long as you fish from land, a pier or a bridge. Temporary 12 month, 7day, and 3 day fishing licenses are available for nonresidents. Children under the age of 16 do not need a license to fish in Florida. |

| Gorgeous white sand and shimmering blue-green water provide just the right setting for shelling, sunbathing, swimming, watching the dolphins play or simply lazing around. Just don’t forget that sunscreen. |

| Bird Watching |
Don’t forget to pack your binoculars! The barrier islands of the Gulf Coast are important rest stops for a wide variety of migrating birds during the fall and spring. The best time to observe these migrating birds is after the passage of cold fronts. Sandy coves, salt marshes, oak forests and pines provide shelter for a variety of fowl.
Shore birds such as the snowy plover, least tern, black skimmer, and willet often nest along the St. George Island State Park’s sandy shores and grass flats. St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge is home to several endangered species, like the bald eagle, and migrating species, like wood storks and peregrine falcons.
Little St. George Island, officially known as the Cape St. George State Reserve, also has endangered peregrine falcons and bald eagles. Oystercatchers and the endangered snowy plovers nest on the beach in the summers. Be careful when birding on Little St. George, though, as venomous cottonmouth snakes are common in the ponds and marshes of the island. |

St. George Island State Park has several hiking trails and boardwalks. The 2.5-mile trail to Gap Point meanders through the pine flatwood forest to the bay. Little St. George Island is also open daily for hiking, though you can only access the island by private boat. |
